Five Tips for Budgeting for Christmas
Tight budgets can make holiday shopping difficult. It doesn’t have to be. You can score the best gifts that your family will love without spending a fortune. There are a few helpful tips for budgeting for Christmas shopping that will help you to make purchases for loved ones without breaking the bank. By shopping smarter, you can save money this holiday season while sticking to your holiday budget.
1. Go Non-Traditional
If you are looking to save money on your holiday shopping, look for non-traditional gifts that won’t break the bank. Popular big box retailers will inflate their prices and eat into your budget. Try small businesses, independent crafters and other non-traditional gifts to get more for your money. In many major cities there are flea markets and crafters fairs that pop up during the holiday season. These places can a goldmine for low-priced gifts that your family will treasure. Handmade gifts are usually appreciated. If you have an eye for creativity, craft your own gifts. A hand-sketched framed portrait makes a great gift for a grandparent. Hire an art student from a local college to create a one of a kind masterpiece.
2. Skip the Frills
Sometimes it’s the little, unexpected things that can add up during the holiday shopping season. Wrapping paper, bows, gift tags and gift bags can add several dollars onto the cost of a gift. While it may not seem like a lot, these costs can add up and eat into your budget. For children’s gifts, try wrapping them in the comic section of the newspaper. If your children are giving gifts, use plain brown Kraft paper or white butcher paper for the wrapping. Allow them to decorate the outside of the paper with their own artwork. Fashion bows out of scraps of ribbon found around the house. Not only will your gifts save you money, they will be great conversation starters and be cherished by your loved ones.
3. Shop Online
Most people don’t think of shopping online as a way save money due to the cost of shipping. There are, however, other reasons why shopping online will help you to save your holiday budget. When you are shopping online, you are less likely to make impulse purchases. Stores realize that people are susceptible to impulse purchasing and will make it very tempting for you to break your budget if you shop in-store. When you’re shopping online, you are less likely to make impulse purchases. In addition, you can shop around for the best price easily, making shopping online more cost effective than going to a shopping mall. Save on gas, avoid the crowds and shop from the comfort of home. Some online stores will allow you to buy online and pick up your purchase in-store.
4. Shop Alone
While most people don’t bring their children along to do the holiday shopping, bringing along a friend or spouse can be just as damaging to your budget. Shopping with a spouse who is cranky or tired can lead you to make quick purchase decisions without looking for the best deal. Shopping with friends can encourage you to buy items that you would not ordinarily buy. Shopping in a mall with another person can increase the time you spend in the shopping area, thus increasing the likelihood that you will spend more money. In addition, when shopping with a friend or spouse, you will be more likely to eat out while shopping, adding to your overall cost.
5. Go for Bundles
To save money on holiday gifts, take advantage of gifts that come in bundles. A set of four mugs can be individually wrapped as four separate gifts. Many fragrance counters offer a free gift with a fragrance purchase. Wrap the two separately and make two gifts out of one. Divide a jumbo pack of miniature toy cars between children and use as stocking stuffers. Candles, books and clothing items can be divided in this way, saving you big bucks during the holiday shopping season. Pair several small low-priced gifts together in one package. This will create the illusion of a larger gift while allowing you to stay within your budget.
Staying within your budget this holiday season is easy. By being creative and strategic with your planning, you can give great gifts without breaking the bank.
