Sushi Rolls Made Easy
Imagine being able to make delicious sushi right in the comfort of your own kitchen. Many people shy away from attempting to make sushi. However, it is easier than you can imagine. All it takes is the right ingredients and a bit of practice.
First, let’s discuss the necessary equipment and ingredients that are staples to creating most sushi rolls. These ingredients include the following: nori, a mat, sushi rice and whatever fillings you wish, such as seafood and vegetables. Here is a closer look at each of these items:
NORI
Nori is simply the flat sheets of seaweed that are either wrapped around the rolls or inside the outer layer of sushi rice. Just about every roll includes nori. Nori can be bought at international markets and specifically at Asian markets. Since there is no difference in toasted seaweed, it is best to buy the most affordable brand.
MAT
A bamboo mat is used to make the actual roll part of the sushi roll. That is to say that the ingredients for the sushi roll are placed on Saran Wrap that is placed on the mat. Then, the chef must roll up the mat to create the roll shape. Be sure to buy a mat that has sticks that are flat on one side and round on the other side. Many cheap mats are round on both sides which makes the roll less dense once rolled.
SUSHI RICE
Sushi rice is also called sushi-meshi and it is a short grained style of rice. It is much stickier than traditional white rice which makes it ideal for sushi rolls. This can be found in the Asian section of a supermarket.
FILLINGS
Choose veggies, traditional raw fish or both for your rolls. If you choose raw fish, be sure to look for a label that reads, ‘sushi safe’ or something that indicates it is safe to be consumed in its original raw form.
HOW TO MAKE A ROLL
1. Face your bamboo mat with the flat side facing up. Cover the mat with Saran Wrap.
2. Fully spread seaweed, or nori, onto mat in even sheets.
3. Cook and drain the rice. Add 1 tablespoon of rice vinegar to two cups of cooked rice for flavoring. Mix well. Then, using wet hands, scoop out balls of rice.
4. Spread the rice in a thin sheet fully covering your bamboo mat.
5. Place your fish piece or veggies on the edge of the nori.
6. Begin rolling the mat from the side that is closest to your body. Continue rolling until you fully roll up the mat.
7. Cut your roll into sushi sized slices.
8. Serve with a small garnish of fresh ginger, wasabi and soy sauce.
